Abstract


GENDER ROLES AND PATRIARCHY IN TURKISH CINEMA: SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF THE FILM DİLBERAY

Cinema is an important tool for influencing and shaping the masses. Many ideas can spread through cinema and drag the masses behind them. Cinema has an important place in developing a nation and showing them right and wrong. Cinema, which shows a mirror feature in reflecting the society, reflects what happens in the society on the white screen. One of the issues most frequently reflected on the silver screen in Turkish cinema is gender discrimination and patriarchy. In the patriarchal structure, the status of women, the restriction of their attempts to solve problems, women's helplessness, lack of a voice, and oppression are frequently seen in movies. This study aims to analyze the patriarchal structure in the film Dilberay in terms of gender roles. Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method was used in the study. In the study, indicators were analyzed through Barthes' connotations. When the film was analyzed with the semiotic analysis method in terms of gender, findings about the oppression of women, patriarchal authority, and the value given to women in society were found. As a result of the findings, it can be said that the movie Dilberay is discriminated in terms of gender and many patriarchal elements are found.
