Abstract

COMPOUND VERBS IN KİTÂBU ÂDÂBU’T-TÂLİBÎN

In this study, the work called Kitâbu Âdâbu't-Tâlibîn, written by Yusuf bin Sultanşah bin Muhammed el-Kastamonî in 900 H (1495 AD), was introduced in general terms and examined in terms of compound verbs. There is no information about the author other than a few sources. Three copies of the work have been found in the Vatican Library, the Turkish Language Association Library and the Sulaymaniye Manuscripts Library. In terms of language features, the work contains the characteristics of Classical Ottoman Turkish. Arabic and Persian words and phrases are widely used in the work. In addition, many expressions, idioms and words used in public language are used in the work so that people can read and understand fiqh subjects.

Compound verbs in the work are generally examined under two main headings: those with noun + verb structure and those with verb + verb structure. Compound verbs in the verb + verb structure are examined under three subheadings: verb + adverb-verb + verb, verb + adjective-verb + verb, and verb + noun-verb +verb structure. Compound verbs in the noun + verb structure are generally used for verb words of foreign origin.
