Abstract

A STUDY OF DEVELOPING LISTENING ATTITUDE SCALE

Listening is among the cornerstones of understanding and agreement, in brief communication. The acquirement of this skill is a process that needs to be taken into consideration and dwelled upon attentively. This is because the acquirement of basic skills will also affect the individual’s next learning-teaching and social processes. Positive experiences will turn into positive attitudes. Negative processes will lead to negative attitudes, which may affect the learning and communication processes negatively. Therefore, skill acquirement is a condition that needs to be dwelled upon. Accordingly, in this study, it was aimed to develop the “Listening Attitude Scale” for secondary school five- grade students. The sample of the study consisted of 372 secondary school five-grade students in the city center of Kars who were chosen via the random method. The data of the study were collected in 2019. The assessment tool was developed primarily by creating a question pool and then receiving an expert opinion. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed via the data acquired. As a consequence, a scale, comprising 24 items and one subscale, was obtained. This subscale was named as “listening attitude”. In the five-point Likert scale, the scorings range as follows: “Strongly Agree”, “Agree”, “Uncertain”, “Disagree”, and “Strongly Disagree”. According to the results of the CFA, the fit coefficients of the scale demonstrated that the model had a good fit with the data set. In light of all these results, it was concluded that the scale had a valid and reliable structure. In this sense, it is believed to contribute to the literature.
