Abstract

INVESTIGATION OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS' ATTITUDES TOWARDS SCREEN READING AND THEIR READING MOTIVATIONS IN TERMS OF VARIOUS VARIABLES

With the intense integration of technology and digital materials into human life, reading from screens and the importance of this activity have been increasing day by day. The increase in the use of digital materials in educational settings has made reading from screens an important concept in the field of education. Considering that cognitive skills, along with affective skills, are important for effective and efficient screen reading activities, it is essential to also regard students' attitudes and motivations towards reading from screens. This research aims to examine how secondary school students' attitudes towards reading from screens and their reading motivation differ according to various variables (gender, age, preschool education status, grade level, and screen usage duration). The study was conducted within the framework of the relational screening model, which is one of the quantitative research methods. The study group consists of a total of 611 secondary school students studying at a public school in the Bağcılar district of Istanbul during the 2023-2024 academic year. For data collection, the "Reading Motivation Scale for Texts," developed by İleri Aydemir and Öztürk 11 (2013), and the "Attitude Scale Towards Reading from Screens," developed by Susar (Kırmızı) (2017), were used. The obtained data were analyzed based on gender, age, preschool education status, grade level, and screen usage duration. The SPSS 22 software was used for data analysis, applying t-tests and One-Way ANOVA. As a result of the research, it was found that there is a significant difference in secondary school students' attitudes towards reading from screens and their reading motivations based on gender, favoring male students. In terms of grade level, a difference was observed in favor of higher grade levels. However, no differences were found regarding age, preschool education status, and screen usage duration concerning attitudes toward screen reading and reading motivation.
