Abstract

READABILITY FORMULA PROBLEMS RELATED TO TURKISH LANGUAGE STRUCTURE

Readability formulas are mathematical tools that analyze the structure of a text to determine its ease and difficulty of reading. These formulas measure the comprehensibility of a text by using variables such as the number of syllables, words, and sentences. Initially developed for English and French, these formulas yield different results when applied to Turkish texts. This situation highlights the necessity for special formulas tailored to the Turkish language. The aim of this study is to identify and evaluate the issues encountered in the application of readability formulas designed for Turkish due to the language's structure and characteristics. The study employs the survey method, one of the qualitative research models. According to the data obtained, the way in which word and sentence structures, abbreviations, and numbers are written and pronounced, as well as factors like the number of single-syllable words, affects the readability levels. As a result, it is recommended that more specific variables be used in the formulas developed for Turkish and that the application steps be detailed. This approach may provide a foundation for the development of technology-supported readability formulas.
