Expressive use of colors, most encountered in poetry among all literary works, contributes to the turn of expression in conveying thoughts, emotions, excitements, and images. Poets utilize the words that express colors in their poems to amplify the meaning through the association of emotions and to form images and themes.
In this study, thirteen of Metin Güven’s books were scrutinized and the colors used by the poet were assorted by the technique of profiling. Unusually associated uses of colors were identified after analyzing the meaning of each color - positive, descriptive, and negative – through the use of Greimas’ category of effective grouping. While analyzing the use of colors, not only were the referential colors included but also the poems were analyzed using colors and their hues.
Consequently, it is understood that all the colors used by the poet who has unique convictions for poems have some specific meanings, colors have positive, negative and descriptive references and the poet managed to be original using expressions of colors.
