The main goal of Turkish education is to develop listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills, which are called four basic language skills. The way to develop basic language skills is through effective vocabulary teaching. In the achievements of the Ministry of National Education Turkish Lesson Curriculum, items related to vocabulary teaching and the necessity of using a dictionary are included. In this respect, the dictionary usage habits of teachers, who are primarily responsible for enriching students' vocabulary and developing their dictionary use skills, appear as an important issue that should be emphasized. This study was prepared to determine the dictionary usage habits of Turkish teacher candidates. The sample of the study consists of 92 students studying in the 3rd and 4th grades of Necmettin Erbakan University Ahmet Kelesoglu Education Faculty Turkish Language Teaching Department in the 2017-2018 academic year. In this study, in which the qualitative research method was used, 12 open-ended questions were asked to the teacher candidates. The data were organized according to content analysis, and the answers given by the participants to those open-ended questions were coded and categorized. Frequency values were given according to these categories, and then the findings were interpreted in tables. At the end of the research; The majority of the participants preferred to use electronic dictionaries, associated the concept of a dictionary with the concept of the book as a connotation, read all the meanings of words while looking at the dictionary, mostly used the "Ottoman Turkish Dictionary" apart from the Contemporary Turkish Dictionary, the dictionary was generally used in "Old Turkish Literature" and "Ottoman Turkish" courses. It was determined that they mentioned names such as “Kasgarli Mahmut”, “Iskender Pala” and “Semsettin Sami” as lexicographers.
